Why Is Cape Kamenjak One of Istria’s Must-Visit Natural Attractions?
At the southernmost tip of Istria, Cape Kamenjak feels like the coastline stripped back to its wild essentials: limestone cliffs, aromatic Mediterranean plants and remarkably clear water hidden among 30 bays and 11 uninhabited islets.
Lonely Planet recently singled out Kamenjak when naming Istria fifth among the 16 best places to visit in Croatia. Once you experience this protected landscape, it is easy to understand why.
A Landscape 98 Million Years in the Making
Protected since 1996, Kamenjak is home to around 600 plant species, including almost 30 types of orchid. Its limestone also preserves dinosaur footprints dating back approximately 98 million years.
Visitors can follow the Dinosaur Trail near Cape Grakalovac, cycle the 12-kilometre Orchid Trail, kayak along the coast or spend the day swimming and snorkelling between hidden coves.
Three Kamenjak Beaches to Discover
Pinižule is an excellent choice for families, combining pebble coves, flat rocks, clear water and natural pine shade. Pair your swim with a walk along the nearby Dinosaur Trail.
Njive is a picturesque pebble and rocky cove where the water becomes deep quickly. Its exceptional clarity makes it ideal for confident swimmers and snorkellers, while a small beach bar provides refreshments beneath the trees.
Mala Kolombarica reveals Kamenjak’s more dramatic side, with high rocks, deep water and a sea cave. Above the cove, the handmade Safari Bar has welcomed visitors since 1993. Swimming here is best reserved for confident swimmers and calm sea conditions.
