  • Film cycle "70 years of Pula on the Third" - 20 films from the history of the Festival

Film cycle "70 years of Pula on the Third" - 20 films from the history of the Festival

From July 3 to 22, don't miss the cycle of cult films "70 years of Pula on Treć" every day on the Third Program (HRT-HTV3) from Monday to Friday from 10:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on the occasion of the jubilee anniversary of the Pula Film Festival.

The retrospective program is composed of mostly restored versions of cult films, classics, popular and neglected titles, which will mark the jubilee 70th anniversary of the Pula Film Festival at the Third Program. The retrospective includes twenty films from Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia from different periods of the Festival's history. Most of the films made before 1990 have been digitally restored, which will allow viewers to watch even those titles they are familiar with in a new and refreshed guise.

The selection includes cult films such as "Ko to tamo peva" (1980) by Slobodan Šijan, "Valter brani Sarajevo" (1972) by Hajrudin Krvavac and "Nacionalna klasa do 785 ccm" (1978) by Goran Marković, the controversial titles "When I'll be dead and white" (1967) by Živojin Pavlović and "Little Soldiers" (1967) by Bahrudin Bata Čengić, but also lesser-known films such as the historical spectacle "Macedonian Part of Hell" (1971), "Carmine" (1969) ) Matjaž Klopčič and "Don't go back the same way" (1965) by Jože Babič.

"The third program joins the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Pula Film Festival. We will remember cult films that were shown in Pula, such as "Valter defends Sarajevo" or "National Class". From July 3, every day from Monday to Friday from 10:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., HTV's third program will mark that great and important anniversary. We will watch the live broadcast of the opening of Pula on the First Program, and the closing on the Third Program. I invite all fans of Croatian and Yugoslav cinematography to be with us because we will dedicate July to excellent old and new films from the Arena in Pula", said Vlatka Kolarović, editor of HTV3.

The program after 1990 includes films by authors of different generations, from Branko Schmidt "Vegetarian Cannibal" (2012), Zrinko Ogresta "S one strane" (2016) and Dalibor Matanić "Zvizdan" (2015), to Dana Budisavljević " Diane Budisavljević's diary" (2019), Igor Bezinović's "Short trip" (2017) and Hana Jušić's "Don't look at me in a drink" (2016). There are also two award-winning minority co-productions: "Nobody's Child" (2014) by Vuk Ršumović and "Teret" (2018) by Ognjen Glavonić, which premiered in Venice and Cannes, and were also awarded at the Pula Film Festival.

In the 70 editions of the Pula Film Festival, hundreds of films were shown, and this selection of 20 titles will provide one of the possible insights into popular themes and aesthetic trends that marked the history of Croatian and Yugoslav cinematography, and thus the Pula Film Festival: original dramas and comedies, partisan and historical spectacles, independent film, as well as new titles that grapple with recent and distant history in an intriguing way. "Recently, a large number of classics that marked the history of regional cinematography have been restored in the region. Therefore, we decided to use the 70th anniversary of the Pula Film Festival as an occasion to remind viewers of the films that generations of viewers grew up with, had fun with, or discussed, that is, to draw attention to those that have been unfairly neglected over the years. With the program, we wanted to open the door to film history in order to show that during the seven decades of this film manifestation, a whole series of talents paraded on the screens of our cinemas in front of and behind the camera, whose work deserves to be discovered by new generations of viewers," said the selector of the film programs of the Pula Film Festival Mario Kozina. The program was created in the co-organization of the Pula Film Festival and Croatian Radio and Television.

For the programs of the Pula Film Festival held every evening in the Arena, tickets are charged at the price of 5 euros for the evening, and it is also possible to buy a set of tickets for all movie nights in the Arena in the amount of 30 euros. Tickets can be purchased online from June 27, 2023, while physical sales will begin on July 8 at the Festival Information Point in the Giardini, and in front of the Arena from July 15. Admission to screenings at other festival locations is free.
